For your project I suggest a modern Japanesse style. In the front yard I covered the existing concrete with gravel and a path made out of rectangular stones displayed irregularly. On the sideways some vines climb up the existing brick walls.
In the yard in front of the kitchen the gravel is replaced with grass. The middle fence was removed to give a sense of continuity with the other space. Moreover the grass goes forward to the entrance to give a glimpse of the existence of this little yard.
The bins were incorporated in a bin store as you mentioned. This is made out of white painted wood, resembling the two remaining fences to create continuity. This bin storage is also covered in vines so that your kitchen view would be a pleasant one.
At the entrance I placed a pot plant, something minimalistic to define this area.
The lighting is composed of ground lightsources and a ceiling light at the front door. They are placed to create an intimate atmosphere and a pleasant ambiental light.
As for the French navy canopy cladding, I kept it, just painted it gray, as in the photos your neighbours seem to have this too. I feel it was better for the ensemble image.
I hope you will like it!
