The design intent was to craft a space that is bathed in natural light all year. A space that exudes warmth. A space that is inviting and nurturing. A space that allows a multiplicity of functions.Keeping this intent in mind, the entire house was planned around a open-to sky court that provides light and air into the built volume.
A combination of concrete and wood is used to craft the volume from the outside. This is both modern and inviting. This open volume stands in stark contrast to the neighbouring development intentionally.
The boundary wall has been kept low to accentuate the openness of the building. A wooden trellis acts as a canopy for the terrace accessed on the first floor and looking into the open-to-sky court. At night, the building becomes a box emanating light.
An earthy material palette has been utilized in the interiors. A combination of North-facing skylights and windows opening into the court would provide natural light all through the day with a minimum of heat penetration. The open staircase ties the two floors of the building together. The space under the staircase is used for a bookshelf that is backlit with frosted glass. The abundance of light will bounce of a sculptural element- a faceted powder coated steel structure that would change in appearance with the passing of the day.
1 bedroom each on the ground and first floor overlook the court. The bedroom itself is treated in very earthy tones and clutter in general is avoided in the design.
An open kitchen is proposed with a lacquered glass finish. The red colour is chosen to make this a more informal area of the house. That, with the island and seating would be wonderful congregation space in the house.
A terrace is provided on the first floor level. The terrace would provide a much needed breakout / party space that could be used when the weather allows for it. This terrace was also introduced to provide more light into the court and the living space on the ground floor.
The Prayer room is provided on the first floor and the store room is provided on the second / terrace level.
