The residence is designed to have flexibility of spaces. The design process was to have minimal amount of lines and optimal amount of space for each activity.
The kitchen and dining merge seamlessly into one another and are close to the living area. The kitchen and the living has a view towards the entrance of the house so that one can easily keep a check towards the entrance.
Even though relatively small in dimensions , the house feels sufficently big and breathable due to the double height above the dining area. This is flanked by the staircase on two sides which doubles up as a storage / library area.(check the views). This is particularly useful when there are many guests staircase can act as seating. Also space has been carved out between the bedrooms to accomodate a common wash area.
The first floor has a large hall around the cutout, a pooja room , a store room and two bedrooms. The large hall and the pooja room open into the balcony ehich acts as a spill out area for both these functions.
The terrace has a skylight for the double height. It is openable to let the hot air escape and works well to maintain air circulation through out the house. This works well in extreme north indian climate.During winters these shutters can be closed to trap hot air and keep the house warm. The staircase room opens out towards pergolas and a informal shaded area where there is a swing. The roof of the staircase room is accessible through ladder and can be used to install solar panels and water heater in the future.
Over all the house performs very well for North Indian climate, is spacious and can adapt with time to accommodate future's technologies.
