We have 1979 kitchen that needs to be remodeled. There is a supported column and beam that attached to the kitchen's counter that we wanted to remove. However, after having 2 architects came out, we decided that it would be better to keep the column and avoid costly remodeling associated with removing the column and beam. We just need a designer to come with a modern design idea that will work around the column in the way that we will enjoy our kitchen. May be dressing up a column or do some creative design so having the column there won't bother us so much
We also have a small section nearby the kitchen that we wants to make it a part of the kitchen (Please see the kitchen drawing plan for detail).
II. WHAT WE WANT
We want to make a small section to be a place for pantry / work area. Similar to what we have now except that the counter will be raised up to be the same level as the kitchen counter and a nice pantry will be in place of the original cabinet.
We want to make a kitchen counter top a one - level countertop instead of what we have now. We are thinking about the L shape counter top, but we are open up for any creative ideas to make it look modern. We also like to save any counter spaces we have so counter space is also important to us as much as the storage spaces.
When you enter the house, you will see the family/living area with fireplace and the kitchen will be on the left side. We want to redesign and convert our tradditional fireplace to a linear style, gas fireplace with nice shelving unit on each side of fireplace and then we can put a flat screen TV on the top above a mantel (plase see picture for visual aid)
We plan to use the living room / fireplace for family area, where we can put a small couch or something there to make it cozy.
Also, there is a beam that is connected to the kitchen column and goes across right above kitchen cabinet. If you see the pic 1.1 in the "images" tab, it will explain what I am referring to. We want to do something with that beam, perhaps dressing it up or something else, so that it won't bother us so much -- the same problem as we have with the kitchen column.
We also want to raise the kitchen cabinet up to the ceiling and want a top part to be a glass door cabinet. The lower part is a regular door cabinet. In the "Images" tab you can see pictures showing what we would like our new cabinets to look like, and we also added an image showing a modern fireplace to give designers an idea of what we're looking to put in place of current fireplace we have.
Pic.2 shows a drawing of a kitchen design that we got before, but we did NOT like the idea because we hate the column so much. There was an idea about changing the column shape and maybe making it smaller; and, perhaps making a round counter top around it.
We really need help in makeover this kitchen. We have been postponing this project for 7 years and counting.. LOL Thank you for your help.
