This contest is for a funkynew bedroom for our 2 young sons Jayden (9yrs old) and Kian (5yrs old). We would love to give our boys their own personalized version of an ultimate kids room! We are envisioning a fun, creative room that promotes play and allows our boys to be boys. The room is fairly large and the goal is for the boys to have a place where they can hang out with their friends, play, relax, and of course do homework.
We are both drawn to "out-of-the-box" design ideas and would love to include some multi-level sleeping/playing/reading spaces (the ceilings are over 9ft high). The kids have a wooden playhouse (photo) in the backyard that was damaged by last year's big storm and we'd love to see it reimagined and used as one of the main elements in this new room. After removing the bar supporting the swings & rings, we could reconfigure the main "house" section and the desk/bench below it. We can handle some carpentry ourselves but could also bring in a carpenter if necessary. Some ideas for it are:
- Redesigning it into a new bunkbed for the boys
- Using the table/bench for a homework space
- Mounting the climbing handholds on the wall to create a mini climbing wall, then padding the section of floor underneath
- Incorporting the slide somehow
Jayden is a big San Diego Chargers fan so we'd like the color palette based on the team's colors. Kian loves Skylanders and we've got some Skylander wall decals (photo) to have incorporated into the design in some way.
Other ideas we have thought about:
- Lowering the closet and making a reading/relaxing "loft" space above the closet
- Having the "rock climbing wall" lead up to the space described above
- Having a video game area
- Incorporating some creative storage/shelving
Other elements that could be cool:
- Some unique or fun lighting
- A tablet/ipad charging area
We don't have a huge amount of money to invest into this project so we're hoping to be able to do a lot of the work ourselves. That said, we are willing to invest in a few new pieces of furniture and/or accessories. We also have access to a number of different tradespeople who can be brought in for carpentry, light construction, and electrical if necessary. Please also keep in mind, our home is built of concrete block and rebar so rewiring and/or remodeling is a little tougher than it would be with a framed/drywalled home. I've included photos of the room, the playhouse, and a drawing of the basic shape and measurements of the room (to the best of our ability). Please feel free to email questions about anything and everything that I missed!
