My wife and I own a 1958 ranch with a 1450 sf main floor. We had a structural wall separating the kitchen and living room removed to open up the space. The entrance, living room, fireplace and kitchen are now in one 19x23' room, with a 5x6' pantry in a separate space next to the kitchen. Now we would like to redesign this larger space.
WHAT TO ACHIEVE? A warm, inviting open space when we walk into our home that integrates the front door, entrance, living room, fireplace, kitchen and pantry in an artful, elegant way that is architecturally interesting and takes our breath away every time we see it.
OUR STYLE? I'm a university professor and a marriage & family therapist who tends to enjoy elegant and traditional and architecturally interesting. My lovely Swedish wife is a professional musician and middle school teacher who enjoys artistic, colorful, simple and easy to clean. So while we have our differences, we've spent our 37 years together identifying those things we both enjoy. We're not stuck on a period or a style, we're quite willing to be flexible and eclectic. We both enjoy quality and beauty and elegance.
THINGS WE WANT:
Increase the counter space in the kitchen. We need sufficient counter space for two people working together. We would also like kitchen cabinets to the ceiling without soffits. The kitchen can possibly have an island.
The kitchen furniture can match or contrast the mahogany cabinets in the pantry.
We would like accessible trash receptacles for both recyclable and unrecyclable garbage.
Upgrade the fireplace and mantle, without the woodstove. We only use the fireplace half a dozen times a year but is special when we do.
Fix the entrance. Right now the entrance constitutes a tripping hazard due to the 4" stepup from the entrance to the oak floor in the living room. We want an entrance that our guests won't trip on.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Our pantry has two Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Rhythm Andersen Art Glass windows. We would like to use more Frank Lloyd Wright art glass hints where possible in the new space, including in the front door.
Include the quartersawn sycamore dining table I just finished, made from wood given to us by our son. It's a round table, 4' in diameter at its smallest, and extends to 5', 6' and 8' with leaves (please see picture).
Recommend kitchen cabinets, granite or high-end counter tops, high-end appliances.
Recommend lighting and furniture placement.
EXECUTE THE PROJECT EVENTUALLY? Yes, we're in the midst of executing, and have been for 10 years. We enjoy the journey. We are committed, and we will continue to be executing.
CONTINUE WORKING WITH DESIGNER? Possibly yes.
NEED TO BE ON SITE? Not necessarily.
CRITERIA: I'll be doing most or all of the work myself, so I like to do things once, do them extra well, and do them in a way that I'm still amazed by their timeless beauty 20 years later. So I prefer high quality. Affordability is not an issue. We do prefer green design and eco-friendly, but we're not religious about it. We would like accessible trash receptacles for both recyclable and unrecyclable garbage.
What am I looking for? A layout, plan view, top view, description in text format, a section and elevation, birds eye view, eye-level view, including a lighting design and schedule.
