I am looking for a design for my living room. The room is rectangular, with only one long, continuous wall. It also has a fireplace. There are two windows, two doorways, and two radiators to work around. I would like this room to be used for reading, relaxing, and watching TV. I would like seating for at least 8 people, but it can be spread throughout the room. Sofas, loveseats, sectionals, and upholstered chairs with ottomans would all work. Furniture placement is the most difficult aspect of the design. I am looking for a very functional room.
The TV cannot be mounted above the fireplace because the mantel is too high. I would like one or two area rugs, but I would not completely cover the hardwood floors. I would like better lighting, too. There is no way to put a fixture in the ceiling, so the lighting must all be floor or table lamps. I would like a sofa, up to 8 feet, and/or a sectional if it works in the space. A loveseat or armchairs or a combination of the two could go with the sofa. I would like more storage in the room. At this time, there is only one 7 foot by 3 foot bookcase (dark wood finish) that would stay in the space. All the other existing furniture will not stay in the room.
The most important aspect of the design is how the space is best used. Seating should make sense for TV viewing or for reading. Storage is important because the house is almost 100 years old and has very little closet space and no built-in storage. There is currently nothing really dividing the space, but I would be open to dividing it with furniture pieces if it would make the space function better.
