We recently purchased and renovated our home, and we need help with our family room. Right now, we have placed our old furniture in the space, but I would like to replace all of that.
The room itself is about 21' x 24' 6". I have attached a floor plan as well as several pictures. I am working on the area highlighted in yellow & green. The ceiling height in the yellow area is 8', and the height in the green area is 17'.
The floor is dark stained hickory, and the walls are painted with a Benjamin Moore Color called Barren Plain. The ceillings are painted flat white. Depending on the light, the wall color looks like a taupe, warm grey, or sometimes with a hint of lilac.
The TV is recessed into a custom niche, and is surrounded by some decorative niches. There are two wall mounted lights on the window wall - I would like to replace those.
The fireplace is made from the same stone as the exterior of the house, so I would like to keep it, but I would like to replace the mantel shelf.
Our house is in the modern/contemporary realm, more European than American on the inside, especially the adjoining kitchen - which has white high gloss frameless cabinetry and quartz countertops.
The room will be our main "family" zone - watching tv, entertaining, etc. We have two young children (3 year old and newborn) but most of their toys are in a playroom on the same floor. Likewise, there is a bar, wine cellar and tasting room in the basement, so we do not need those elements in the family room.
We are looking for a place that both looks elegant and comfortable. That will work for having couples over for drinks, or for the kids to sprawl out and watch TV. I would like to emphasize the beautiful views outside, while getting some privacy (our neighbors can see in from the window wall).
Since we have two very young children, the materials should be very durable and easy to clean, while still being comfortable. I was thinking either leather or microfiber.
In terms of our style, we like to shop at Room and Board, Ligne Roset, BO Concept, occasionally at Crate and Barrel. I prefer streamlined over fancy, with a high comfort level. I do not like the pottery barn look, and prefer solid colors or suble patterns vs bold prints. Buttonless tufting can be acceptable, but nailhead trim is usually not. I usually prefer shades of grey, neutrals, and medium to dark brown tones, however, an occasional pop of color, judiciously applied, can be a good thing.
I would like to implement this plan ASAP. This is the first room in the house we are designing, and there will be more after. I am certianly open to continuing to work with the winning designer on future projects.
The sofa, sectionals and/or lounge chairs should be specific models from either American Leather or Elite Leather. Please try to keep the design relatively child friendly - i.e. no sharp metal corners, etc.
I am looking for an excellent use of the space while minimizing the ceiling height issue, comfort, style. There should be seating for at least 10, but more is certainly acceptable. Our budget is fairly flexible, I'd say 10-20K retail value.
I would like a space plan with either 2 sofas and lounge chairs, or a sectional + lounge chairs, rugs, cocktail/coffee tables, lighting, a new fireplace mantel shelf, artwork suggestions and window treatment ideas. Please use and list specific items when you place the furniture, and please specify the fabric type and color. Also, 3D views and elevations will certainly be helpful.
